Middleton High School students are taking charge of their civic responsibility by learning how to vote and registering themselves for future elections.
Recently, MHS Senior Advisory students attended an impactful voter registration presentation led by U.S. Government student tutors alongside Carly Persson, Village Administrator and Economic Development Director for the Village of Cross Plains, and Becky Ward, Administrative Assistant and Court Clerk.
The presentation emphasized the importance of youth voter turnout and educated students on the logistics of registering to vote, absentee and early voting options, and how to stay active voters as they move away or change addresses in the future.
This event also kicked off a four-day student-led voter registration drive at Middleton High School. During the drives, student leaders offered resources about voter registration and encouraged students to be well-informed by researching the 2024 candidates.
Two student leaders shared why they believe it is important to vote:
Akshay Manna (Left): "When you live in a democracy, it is not just your right but your responsibility to participate in that democracy because the moment you stop participating, you stop having a voice, and you stop taking our country where we want it to go—especially with young people. We have some of the lowest voter turnout in all age groups. Making sure we know how to register to vote, that we can vote, and that we go to vote helps us have a voice in the country that we live in."
Dhriti Prakash (Right): "Our age group has a really big impact on the elections. We are voting for our future. We should be determining our own future and shouldn't just let the older generations decide because this is for the next four years, and that is a really big turning point in our lives, so it is important that we vote for our own futures."
We are proud to see our students taking positive action toward their futures and staying informed about the world around them.
