The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has cast a well-deserved spotlight on six such educators as finalists for the esteemed 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Amidst these accomplished teachers, Rhonda Veroeven, a passionate sixth grade science teacher from Glacier Creek Middle School in the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District, stands out for her exceptional dedication and innovative teaching methods.
PAEMST, the most prestigious honor for U.S. math and science teachers, acknowledges the crucial role such professionals play in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. The national competition, overseen by the National Science Foundation on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, will culminate in the selection of one mathematics and one science teacher to receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation, an opportunity for professional development, and a trip to Washington, D.C. for an exclusive awards ceremony.
The PAEMST program, in place since 1983, involves careful selection by state committees followed by a rigorous national judging process. The awards not only celebrate the winners but also serve to highlight effective education models and strategies that can be replicated across the country.
