The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District has prioritized several upgrades to athletic facilities at the high school campus, with the aim of expanding access and improving gender equity. The upgrades will be paid for using the interest that has been earned from a capital referendum that took place in 2018.
Recently, the Board of Education gave the green light to these projects, which include the following:
Converting the baseball field to synthetic turf. This would allow for more diverse uses and lower maintenance. The outfield will also include a practice field for football, lacrosse, and PE classes.
Building a new synthetic turf softball field on the site of the current practice field. This will bring parity with the boys' baseball facilities.
Reconstructing the 8 tennis courts, which currently have major cracking issues.
The district estimates that these projects will cost between $4.6-5.3 million. The interest from the 2018 capital referendum can only be used for facilities improvements at the high school.
The district believes that these upgrades will improve amenities and expand access for over 1,700 students currently enrolled in PE, as well as athletes, the marching band, and other groups. It also addresses gender equity concerns and community feedback on the poor conditions of the tennis courts.
The next step will be for the district to initiate the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, which will present different pricing options for the projects, including the cost for different turf options.
Overall, the Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District is taking a step forward, with the hope of creating state-of-the-art athletic facilities for its students.
