The WSMA Student Composition Project encourages and recognizes the efforts of Wisconsin’s student composers. This year a total of 115 submissions were received from 81 students. Thirteen submissions received honorable mention distinctions and 43 submissions received awards that were based on merit in 12 categories.

The Student Composition Project provides student composers in grades 4 through 12 the opportunity to receive feedback regarding the positive qualities of their piece as well as provide ways to improve as a composer in the future. Each submission is evaluated and receives a written critique by a professional Wisconsin composer. Evaluators determine awards that will be presented to students at the awards ceremony. Division winners also receive a $200 scholarship and the opportunity to present their composition at the awards ceremony.

The virtual awards day is Saturday, May 8. There will be a composer Q&A session led by two Wisconsin composers followed by the awards ceremony.
