Middleton High School’s Model United Nations Club participants in the largest Model UN conference in New York City

Middleton High School’s Model United Nations Club traveled to New York City from March 9th-13th to participate in the National High School Model United Nations Conference (NHSMUN). NHSMUN is an annual conference that attracts thousands of participants worldwide. It is the largest Model UN conference in the world.

Model UN is a simulation of the United Nations. Students from around the world come together to represent countries, regions and international organizations in various committees and hold diplomatic meetings.

Our student delegates participated in a variety of committees, including the Convention Against Corruption, Children’s Fund, Security Council, European Court of Human Rights, Cabinet of Ministers of the USSR- August 1991, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Scottish Parliament, and Food and Agriculture Organization.

Topics of the conference included: reducing food waste to combat hunger, housing insecurity for children, corruption and press freedom, transnational crime against cultural property, the security in the South China Sea, Scottish Independence Referendum Post-Brexit, and debt restructuring in Sri Lanka.

MHS Junior Claudia VanBendegom won an Award of Merit in her respective committee, and Sophomore Truman McRay and Freshman Crystal Huang won an Award of Excellence in their respective committee.

Model UN is an excellent way for students to practice their public speaking skills and gain confidence in their ability to think on their feet. Model UN clubs are also a great way for students to meet like-minded peers who share similar interests.

While in New York, students had a chance to hear from Csaba Kőrösi, who currently serves as the President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, explore the downtown Manhattan area, and visit the United Nations Headquarters. Model UN is currently in Evanston, Illinois, attending the Northwestern University Model United Nations Conference (NUMUN) from April 12-15.

Model UN meets every Monday night from 4:00-5:00 pm in the North LMC to prepare for conferences and discuss global political issues.
